THEATRE EXPLORATION (GRADES 1 - 3)
Each Theatre Exploration class is
built around a theme. Children love entering the
world of theatre by using the actor’s tool
of improvisation (or “let’s
pretend”). They become different characters,
sing songs and tell stories through words and action
inspired by their imagination. We also play fun-filled
theater games and explore how to give characters
a personality with our own voice and body. On the
final day of class we invite our families to join
us and share our favorite activities and stories.
Stories in Motion
Students will be the ultimate storytellers of this
creative movement class, as they put their imaginations
together to create an original story full of wacky
characters. Classes will consist of: physical and
vocal warm-ups, animal yoga, narrative pantomime,
found object puppetry and mask work.

Stories in a Trunk
Costume pieces and props from the Coterie Theatre
storage offer a completely new world for creative
storytelling! Using theatrical items from a very
special trunk, students will tell their own stories
that they develop either individually or as part
of a group. This student-driven approach creates
opportunities for children to develop their imagination
and unique abilities through character and story.

ACTING CLASSES
Acting I (grades
4 – 6 and grades 7 – 12)
Acting I is designed to lay the groundwork for beginning
actors. We will play theatre games that will help
you feel comfortable using your voice, body and
mind to pursue objectives, overcome obstacles, create
characters and scenes, and work as an ensemble.
You will also be introduced to basic acting theory
and terminology. Acting I serves as the foundation
for our core acting program at the Coterie Theatre.

technique and provides an introduction to scene
study. Acting II is available to students who have
had the Coterie Acting I or an equivalent theatre
training class. Acting II explores acting technique
through theatre games, improvisation, dialogue and
characterization work. Students will gain skills
and technique that allow them to inhabit characters
with body, face and voice.

Acting III (grades 4 – 6
and grades 7 – 12)
Acting III is a scene study class that takes actors
to the next level of training without the stress
of a public performance. Actors not only need to
memorize lines – they must fully embody their
character and react to other characters, set and
props as the character. Students in this advanced
acting class will concentrate on intensive scene
study, learning to explore text through movement
and vocal work in order to truly connect with a
character. Prerequisites include the Coterie Acting
I and II or equivalent actor training and experience.
Student scenes also offer an opportunity to be considered
for the Coterie Master Class in Acting as well as
productions in the 2009-2010 Coterie season for
interested class members. (NOTE: this class can
be taken multiple times because each time students
enroll in a scene study class, they are challenged
with new material and different scene partners.)
